6 Ways the FBI Investigates a Potential Threat
Curious about how the FBI examines information that could lead to a crime? In writing my stories, I need to ensure my FBI characters approach a possible crime with accuracy. To answer this question, I talked to my friend, Shauna Dunlap, Special Agent/Media Coordinator for Houston’s FBI.
“There are several ways we can investigate potential threats depending on the nature of the threat and the medium from which it is transmitted. Most common today is social media, email, and we still have the old fashioned phone call threats too. Obviously, each case is different, and we conduct a logical investigation where the evidence leads us. Below are some of the typical ways we will investigate potential threats.â€

Conduct interviews of witnesses/human sources.

Subpoena phone/email/social media records.

Subpoena cell phone tower data for towers near where threat received/timing of threat.
