Synopsis:
Welcome to the Winters Family Series, a sweet and sexy contemporary romance, where family comes first, romance is all around, and plates will be filled with many delicious meals.
Joshua Winters is a math teacher by day, bartender by night. He's the middle Winters brother, and tends to be a bit of a wild child. Ten years ago he met the girl of his dreams in algebra class, his junior year of high school. He tries all of his sexy charm on this unapproachable girl, but then she mysteriously leaves Wilmington and he feels lost. Now seeing her standing in the bar where he works, he realizes this may be his second chance.
Kenzie Waters grew up a military brat and traveled everywhere while she was growing up. Since she relocates about every six months to a year she vowed to not make friends and just keep to herself. When she met Joshua Winters in high school, he managed to crack her tough exterior. Still guarded, she kept her distance from the cutest boy in high school. When her father is called for another tour of duty in Afghanistan, her mom moves them back to Arizona to be with family. Just two months after living back in Arizona, her father comes home injured. The next ten years, she endures so much, and yet Joshua always stayed in the forefront of her mind.
Now, Kenzie has made her way back to Wilmington, NC, and hopefully into the arms of the one man who had her heart all along. Sometimes we fall in love with someone even before we know it.
Excerpt
As she walked out of her office, a flash of movement caught her attention. She walked up front and saw Joshua sitting on a chair. He had his head bent, and was looking at his phone. She stopped and just looked at him, damn he was gorgeous. Somehow she had to tell him about her degrees, or lack thereof, but how? She walked towards him, and at the same moment he lifted his head and looked into her eyes. They both never took their eyes off each other, Kenzie stopped just inches from him.
With just a hint of a smile, “I thought you were heading to The Clam Bake with Izzy and Drew?”
He stood and walked towards her. Filling the empty space between them, “I decided to wait and walk over with you. Is that okay?”
“Of course.” She had her hands knotted together, and her thumbs were moving back and forth. Her head was bent, and she was looking at her hands.
Joshua was only about 4 inches taller than her, so he bent just slightly to look into her chocolate colored eyes. “You want to talk about what has you distracted?”
She looked up and wanted to just melt into him, smiling, “Not right now, let’s go get a drink.”
He wasn’t going to push, he didn’t know her enough to push. “Whenever you’re ready, you know I’m here.”
She looked confused, “Why?”
He was a little thrown off by the question, “Why what?”
“Why would you want to be here for me, after all I did to you? I was horrible to you in high school, and then never bothered to apologize - until ten years later.” She stopped talking, and turned away from him, then quietly whispered, “Shit, I still haven’t apologized.”
Joshua walked up behind her, wrapped his arms around her waist. He really could get used to this, the feel of her next to him. “I’m working on letting go Kenzie, and you should, too. Only forward, right?”
She leaned her head back onto his chest and let out a deep sigh, “I don’t think I can let go just yet, there are a few things that I need to resolve first.” She turned into his embrace, loving the way it felt in his arms. She really hoped he would still want to be near her once he knew about her, and her past.
******
Kenzie was laughing as she walked into The Clam Bake. Joshua was behind her, lightly poking her sides and trying to make her laugh. She suddenly turned and grabbed his hands in hers, “Oh my God, paybacks are a bitch!”
Joshua couldn’t stop smiling, with their hands still joined, he tugged her closer to him. He whispered for only her ears, “Ya, what’re going to do, spank me?”
Kenzie immediately flushed at his words, “Maybe?”
Joshua pulled her even closer, “I think we have a problem?”
Looking confused, “What kind of problem?”
But before he could answer her question, Izzy hopped over and stuck her head in between theirs. “Hi there chick-a-dees, you plan on joining us for dinner, or giving the restaurant a show of a lifetime?”
Kenzie pressed her head to Joshua’s chest, her mouth was facing his chest. With a muffled voice, “What are you doing to me, Joshua Winters?”
Isabel laughed, like full belly laughed, “Sweetie, it’s called the Winters charm…and they’re all freaking hot, of course.”
Joshua wrapped his arms around Kenzie, “My charm and looks have you flustered? Well now you know what you do to me, every single time you walk into a room.” He whispered in her ear, “You also make it hard for me to walk properly.” He bent and kissed her temple, “Want bourbon on the rocks to calm your nerves?” Then he poked her side again to get her attention.
She quickly lifted her head to protest, but instead was suddenly lost in his eyes. Just inches from his mouth, and all she wanted to do was kiss those gorgeous full lips. Then he smiled, full teeth showing and all, and that was it for her. She leaned up and kissed him, not a thank you or how are you kiss - it was a kiss that started to heat the whole room up instantly.
When she pulled back, they both had glazed looks, and half grins plastered on their faces. He pulled back, put his arm around her waist and walked them towards Isabel and Drew. Isabel was smiling, “I just ordered you both bourbon on the rocks, you need it.”
Kenzie finally found her voice, “Thank you, Izzy. Did you make it a double?” They all started laughing.

Synopsis
Welcome to the Winters Family Series, a sweet and sexy contemporary romance where family comes first, romance is all around, and plates will be filled with many delicious meals.
We can’t determine when we fall in love, or who we will fall in love with. There is no magic eight ball to tell us the answer. You just let two completely different souls intertwine, and let the magic happen all on its own.
Drew Winters is a sexy firefighter, and middle brother in the Winters family. With all his good looks and charm, he tends to attract self-absorbed-too-much-make-up type of women. He grew up in Wilmington, NC, and has lived in a little cottage by the beach for over four years. The morning he notices his new neighbor by the window in the cottage next-door, where only a shimmering curtain separates them- everything will change.
Isabel Sloane grew up in Philadelphia, PA, but decided it was time for a change of scenery. She has worked as a television reporter for several years, and recently took a job in Wilmington. She is a gorgeous plus-size woman, who tends to be judged because of her size. Her last boyfriend just liked having a companion for events or dates, otherwise he never noticed her. Now, she plans to put men on the back-burner, work towards becoming an anchor, and cook up all her favorite recipes. Then she notices Mr. Blue-Eyes next-door going out for a morning run…
In the end, will Drew be ready to catch Isabel? Will Isabel be ready for that happily ever after?

Prologue
They say that a picture is worth a thousand words… Well, I've just received two pictures, so does that mean two thousand words? I don’t know, but I do know I can’t think of two thousand words to describe how I feel right now: two thousand expletives maybe, but not two thousand actual, structural words. I can tell you how it feels like my heart is breaking right now. What I thought I felt a couple of days ago, the heartache and the pain, is nothing like I'm feeling right now. My legs shake, and I collapse on the sofa in my living room. I look back down at my phone and see that dreaded first picture that no one person wants to receive. The screen blurs, and I watch as a fat teardrop falls onto the glass screen. And then another until my phone becomes soaked with my tears. A sob hitches in my throat, getting caught for a second before it flows out of my mouth like it’s a natural sound coming from my body, when in actual fact; it’s not. Laughter and sarcastic remarks are what I'm used to coming out from my mouth, but not this. Not these horrible sounds that my body seems to instinctively know. I feel the pain start to radiate through me, my chest burns and my heart is collapsing in on itself. I can feel pins and needles start to tingle from my toes all the way up to the tips of my fingers, and I feel goosebumps form on my arms, indicating the coldness running through me. If it weren’t for the pounding in my head, and the sound of my blood rushing in my ears, I would have said that my body had frozen. If one’s blood freezes, then it doesn’t circulate through the body and the heart fails… Well, that’s what it feels like anyway; my heart was failing. I'd never known heartbreak before. I had seen it, numerous times through friends and family, on TV and in movies, but I had never felt it. And if this is what it feels like, I never want to be in love with someone… but it was too late. I already was, and he had broken me into pieces. Teeny-tiny pieces. I don’t think even the best surgeon in the fucking universe would be able to put me back together again- sort of like Humpty Dumpty. And all of this is because of one man. One man that I loved- that I thought loved me! It was fourteen words that broke me two days ago. Two pictures worth two thousand words, that completely shattered me not even two minutes ago, and it was six words that I spoke out loud right now that seemed to echo around my living room and steel my resolve to forgo men in the future… “Fuck you, Blake Walker. Fuck you.”

I leap forward, grab his hand, and place the transmitter in his palm. He looks down at it, and I run across the street. I plant myself against the building on the far corner, the hard hot gray stone scratching my naked back in the night heat.
I'm way across the street from him now, cars streaming between us. I point at my ear with the Bluetooth receiver implanted inside. He puts the transmitter up to his mouth. My heart is nearly pounding out of my chest. This is it. This is me putting my head on the chopping block. He can say "Go home." That's all he needs to do. He can just tell me to go and I will. That's the bargain. That's the agreement. I always keep my agreements. He raises the transmitter to his mouth. I clench my teeth, my eyes wide open. I'm breathing hard, my hands locked behind me. I will do whatever he says, I remind myself, I will do whatever he says. Even if he tells me to go home. He's about to speak, his face still locked in that frozen visage and half-smile. Then he laughs, turns sideways, raises the transmitter up to his mouth and says, "Let’s play." I nod my head. Oh my God! Yes! The fire starts anew down below. He's playing. I've gotten him to play! That was the hardest step. "My sweet dirty whore," he says, "you're naked, aren't you?" Wow, kudos to the body paint artist. Even the great Lukas Thorn can't really tell that I’m naked. "You realize what you've set yourself up for? You're going to have to prove that to me, you know." I nod. "You're going to have to prove that to me in public." Oh God! The very thought sends me into delirium. Yes, I will. Yes, I'll do anything. In front of anybody. To please you. Yes, I will. I so want you. I so want you to tell me to do horribly nasty things in front of other people. I so will do anything you ask. All you have to do is command me.
Just command me.

About THE ISLAND:
Emma Keller’s estranged grandmother has been missing for seven years. Emma journeys to her grandmother’s private island with the task of readying it for sale. Local rumors say it’s cursed, but she dismisses them as superstition. While there, she unearths a hidden cave, and is visited by two men soon after. Itu is well-spoken, though he hides his face in shadow. The other is more of a worry; with skin of alabaster, Thim’s feral presence sets her on edge. Emma discovers the island has a dark past. The two men aren’t human, but awakened demons…and they have their sights set on her.
Excerpt from THE ISLAND:
She was jarred awake by a cry. The vestiges of her nightmare dissipated as she orientated herself. Nightmare. Emma let out a sigh of relief. The cry sounded again. A distant sound, high and wailing. A baby’s cry. Her heart quickened. Good god, surely that can’t be a baby?
The fire in the stove had burned down, its embers lending a glow to the living room. Emma looked out the front window. The yard was still. She unlocked the door and opened it a crack. The cry drifted in with the breeze, faint but unmistakable. She ran through her mind what possible bird or animal could make the sound and came up with nothing. Characteristically, the island was blanketed with silence, almost like a vacuum. She stood, uncertain. After several minutes, the sound started again—the unmistakable high wail of a baby. She slipped on her boots and parka.
Fog trailed like cobwebs in her wake. The mournful cry threaded through the trees and came from the direction of the house ruins. In spite of a growing anxiety at what she’d find, she quickened her pace. If that is a baby, it’s still alive, and I need to get to it. If it’s not a baby… She blocked out the possibilities of what else it could be.
She approached the ruins and the sound stopped. Her heart raced. I know it was coming from here. The area held an unnatural heaviness. A branch cracked behind her and she turned with a start. Something dark darted through the trees.
“Hello?” Her voice sounded muffled in the fog. Emma’s attention snapped to the left. The dark figure ducked out of sight. She took one step backward, and fled.
Heavy footsteps echoed from behind as she plunged through the trees. They were catching up with her. Emma pushed herself to run faster, terrified she’d lose her footing on the uneven ground. The cabin loomed large, a haven in the thick fog. Stumbling across the cabin’s porch, she hurdled through the door and slammed it shut, locking it.
Emma rooted her feet to keep from running around in circles. Straining to hear, she was greeted with eerie silence. Several moments passed before the baby’s cry started again. And this time, it sounded from right outside the door.

When Ana revealed her suspicions to Jackson about the circumstances surrounding his father’s death, she never expected it to be the catalyst for a series of events that could change everything. It was supposed to save him, not push him away. But now Ana is left watching the person she loves more than anything, lose himself to vengeance. Jackson has spent most of his life loyal to the man he calls Uncle. But since learning that Marcus Donohue might have been responsible for the death of his father, Jackson is consumed with the need for revenge. Even if it means hurting the people he loves, and going against everything he believes in, to uncover what happened. Will the truth finally set Jackson free or will it ruin his last chance at happiness with Ana… and a life out from under the shadows of the Donohues? Tribulations will be overcome, truths will be revealed. Welcome to Chastity Falls.
“It’s my best shot. Only one of us is walking away from this and right now my upper hand is that Marcus thinks it will be him.” Dennis stepped off the cage and blew out a long breath. “She doesn’t know, does she?” “No. It’s for the best. Ana thinks we’re planning how we move forward on this together.” Over the last couple of weeks, the pieces of the puzzle had slowly been slotting into place, and more and more I was realizing it was something set into motion a long time ago. “If shit goes south, I need to know you’ll protect her. Even if it means getting her out of Chastity Falls. She’d never leave if I asked her to, she’s stubborn and she thinks we’re in this together.” I hated lying to Ana, but it was better for her to draw her own conclusions than for me to admit that only one of us could walk away from this—Marcus or me. It would crush her. I couldn’t do it to her. To us. “You know I will, but does it have to go down like this?” Dennis’ Adam’s apple bobbed and the desperation in his voice caught me off guard. “Is there no other way? Maybe we could go to someone for help?” Scrubbing a hand through my hair I leaned back against the lockers and said, “This is the only way. We both know it. This is exactly the way Marcus planned it.” The door swung open and the rest of the team filed in. I threw Dennis a look that I hope conveyed my gratitude. I owed him my life. I just hoped I didn’t have to pay up.

Quiet Lies (Releasing on November 12th) by R.L. Griffin
Synopsis:
I was broken before I met Sebastian Pryor, but he decimated me. I swept the ashes of myself into a pile that I kept safe for thirteen years. Believe me it wasn’t pretty, oh but people thought we were perfect. I hate myself most days. I hate that I feel for him as much as I loathe who I’ve become with him. This story is hard to hear. You know what the worst part is? You’ll see part of you in me. You’ll hate that. You won’t tell anyone.
My story is about cracks. A description or telling of how cracks in a marriage, a life, a personality, a heart and a mind begin and continue for years without anyone knowing. You don't always see what causes the fissure, but you feel it. Can you remember who you were before all of this started, before your life became a jumble of deceit, longing and regret?
This book isn’t for anyone who needs a happily ever after.
This book isn’t for anyone who needs a fun time out from their life.
This book isn’t for anyone, but me.
This is my story. I won’t apologize for it.

Excerpt
I stare at her. She stares back at me, and a battle of wills ensues, crackling with challenge that slowly shifts to something darker, hotter, and I reply with a low, rough tone. âMaybe Iâve changed my mind,â I murmur, and suddenly Iâm staring at her lips, her full, kissable, tempting lips. A mix of adrenaline and lust rushes through me, barely contained. My mouth lowers, my need to lose myself in this moment, in this woman a fierce beast that does not want to be ignored.
âDonât,â she whispers urgently.
âDonât what?â I ask, lingering a breath away from touching her face, so close I can almost taste her.
âKiss me again. Because Iâll kiss you back, and weâll both hate me for it.â
Sheâs right. But I still want to kiss her.
âPlease,â she whispers.
âPlease kiss you? Please tie you up and fuck you like youâve never been fucked? Please make you come so many times youâll never forget who you fucked if you fuck me over?â
âPlease donât do any of those things.â
âBecause you donât want me to?â
âI already told you why. Youâll hate me later. And Iâll hate me for giving you the chance.â
âAnd what about me? Will you hate me?â
âI donât have a reason to hate you, Chad. I donât know you.â
âBut you want me.â
âI donât know the right answer to that.â
âThe truth will set you free.â
âThe truth canât set you free if no one believes you.â

THANK YOU!
We are so excited to bring you the Release Day Launch for Alyssa Rose Ivy's The Hazards Series, Books 1-3! The Hazards Series, Books 1-3 is a box set of the first three books, THE HAZARDS OF SKINNY DIPPING, THE HAZARDS OF A ONE NIGHT STAND, and THE HAZARDS OF SEX ON THE BEACH, in her New Adult Romance, Hazards Series. Be sure to grab this box set now! It's on sale for $3.99 for a very limited time and will go up to $4.99!Amazon ** iBooks ** Google Play ** KoboAbout THE HAZARDS SERIES, Books 1-3: The Hazards of Skinny Dipping This isn't a deep book about first loves or self-discovery. If you want a book like that, I'd be happy to recommend one, but I don't have that kind of story to tell. Instead my story is about rash decisions and finding out that your dream guy is bad in bed. It's the story of when I finally went skinny dipping, and how my life was never the same again. Oh, and it's also the story of my freshman year of college and realizing Mr. Right might have been there all along. The Hazards of a One Night Stand One small town boy, one girl who wants more, one roll in the hay... Hooking up with your high school crush is a bad idea, a really bad idea. It was only supposed to be one night, one brief departure from my real life, but nothing ever works out exactly the way you plan. Colton Waters was everything from my past that didn't fit into my present, so why did he have to show up at my college and pledge the one frat I couldn't avoid? Because nothing is ever meant to happen just once. At least not the life changing things that mean the difference between falling apart and falling in love. The Hazards of Sex on the Beach One broken heart, one drink too many, one steamy night in the sand... No one warns you about the dangers of drinking with a broken heart. At least no one warned me. I never imagined I'd fall for a musician, especially not one like Chase, but then again I never expected to have my heart broken into a million pieces by the frat guy I thought was the love of my life. Sometimes it's the rash decisions, like hooking up in the sand, that lead you to the best places—the kinds of places where it's possible to let yourself fall in love again. And then I hear a voice that sends shivers up my spine.
“Hey there, Havoc, too comfy on your bed here to come say hello to your buddy Coen?” Coen. Shit. He’s here. Why is he here? How the? What the fuck is he doing here? My eyes spring open and I’m on high alert. Maybe he won’t realize it’s me. “Hey, Josh.” He says. I can hear his footsteps getting closer. I’m lying here with a half finished tattoo. It’s not like I can take off running right now. Well, I could I guess, but who wants an incomplete tattoo? “Hey, Coen. What’s new man? What are you getting today?” Josh asks him. “Mike’s just going to do a few touch ups. Nothing major planned this visit.” Coen says. Oh good. He already had this in his plans then. He isn’t some psycho stalker that followed me here. I hope. Suddenly I feel his finger, ever so lightly graze up my arm. It sends shivers up my spine and sets my insides on fire and my pulse through the roof. Why does this man, who I’ve only just met, make me so damn crazy? “Hi, Lexi.” I hear him say behind me. His voice vibrates straight to my core. “We meet again so soon! What are the odds?” Someone else catches his attention and he stops. “Oh, hey Mike, there you are!” he booms in that raspy, sexy, voice of his and I hear his footsteps leaving my side. Josh pauses tattooing briefly, squinting at me, and says, “You two know each other?”

Title: Ryan's Love
Series: Sawyer Brothers #1
Author: C.A. Harms
Genre: Contemporary Romance

One of the hardest things I have ever had to do was bury my wife.
The second hardest thing would be watching my 12 year old daughter fall to her knees as they lowered her mother into the ground to rest.
A heart wrenching vision that will forever be etched in my mind.
Claire was my best friend, she had been since we were barely old enough to talk. I always knew, one day, I would marry her. I think I may have even told her that a few times while we were growing up.
Never did I think I would lose her so suddenly.
I knew at that moment…
Our life would never be the same again…
“I’ve thought about this moment so many times,” she confessed, and I smiled against her lips, immediately remembering her confession at the bar.
“Me too, baby,” I assured her. “You are always on my mind, Amber.”
Our moans and sighs mingled as we frantically continued to undress, eager to feel one another without restriction.
Hovering over her now-naked body, I couldn’t help myself from taking a moment to appreciate her beauty. Her light brown hair fanned out over the light color of the pillow, and her perfect body beneath me begged to be touched.
I dipped my head and traced her nipple with my tongue before pulling it into my mouth and sucking softly. Her body instinctively arched toward my lips, and she combed her fingers through my hair as she moaned, pressing her breast closer to my hungry mouth. I continued to suck gently before moving to the other side to show it equal attention.
The only item of clothing still separating us were my boxers, and even they couldn’t hide how excited her body was. I could feel her heat against me as I thrust my hips forward and hit the spot that drove her wild.
“I need you, Ryan. God, I want you,” she whispered against my ear, and I removed my lips from her breast and looked up at her hungry eyes with a grin. Slowly I kissed my way up her chest and neck and over her jaw until I reached her lips once more.
Our tongues tangled as we explored each other’s mouths. “I want you too,” I confessed. “More than anything else, I want this.” We were both breathing heavily, and my heart was rapidly beating as I continued to roam my hands over her body.
Amber lifted her hips and rubbed herself against me, begging me for more without saying the words.
One of the hardest things I have ever had to do was bury my wife.
The second-hardest thing would be watching my twelve-year-old daughter fall to her knees as the preacher uttered his final words of comfort before her mother’s casket was slowly lowered into the grave. It finalized the fact that the woman we loved dearly was no longer within our reach. We would no longer be blessed by her smile or warmed by her words. It was the most heart-wrenching sight, one that will forever be etched in my mind and which left a void in me I was positive would never be filled. It changed the man I thought I was and made me realize that loving someone with your entire heart didn’t ensure they would always be with you. There was no way to predict your fate. Claire was my best friend; she had been since we were barely old enough to talk. I always knew I would one day marry her. I may have even told her so a few times while we were growing up. Even my brother, Noah, who is nearly a year younger than me, thought he would marry her. She was the perfect girl and had every man in Livingston, Montana, mesmerized by her looks and her personality. But she and I were meant to be. I never thought I would lose her so suddenly. Now I was left struggling to find the strength I needed to push forward without her in my life. I couldn’t remember a day she wasn’t by my side, and now she was gone forever. I sat in the chair looking at the deep, freshly dug grave before me, consumed by a feeling of emptiness. The air felt thick as it filtered into my lungs, making me feel like I was being suffocated. The anxiety of my loss was slowly overtaking me as I tried hard to fight the urge to break down and just give up. “Daddy.” Olivia’s sweet whisper pulled me from my daze, and I looked deep into her red, swollen eyes. I felt as if I had just been punched in the gut. There stood my little girl, looking broken and lost.“I miss her already,” she said, her soft voice cracking.

“Excuse me!” I wave a twenty-dollar bill in the air. I may be single and here with my drunk friend who is spewing ex-boyfriend-related vitriol, but at least I’ve got the money to do it. I work for one of the biggest biotech conglomerates in the world, although unfortunately, being the executive assistant of Harley Royce is basically being a glorified secretary to the world’s biggest douchebag. Let’s be honest—in the corporate world, “billionaire” equals “bastard.” The money’s great, but the work sucks. I’m surprised I’m not a bigger drinker after all. “Hey!” I yell out again, but no dice. This is what I get for wearing work gear to the bar—what twenty-two-year-old do you know decides to rock a black blazer to happy hour? I feel like my mother. Or my grandmother. Or both. “Let me see if I can help.” I turn at the sound of the voice but, when our eyes meet, I’m rendered momentarily stunned. Like elephant-dart-to-the-brain stunned. Hello, gorgeous. The beefcake bartenders—sure, they’re hot in a conventional, Magic Mike sort of way. But this guy? He’s hot-hot. Universally hot. Ryan Gosling hot. He’s wearing a dark suit—well-cut, grey wool, probably designer—and his dark-brown hair is neatly cropped, but he’s got a day or so of sexy scruff along his jawline. He looks like he just came in from a board meeting, but that he could have been rebuilding a carburetor yesterday. Put him in coveralls and he’d be your mechanic. (Your sexy as hell mechanic who you’d want bending you over the hood of your car after he changed the oil…) “Yo, Bradshaw!” He calls out at one bartender who’s leaning halfway over the bar with his face an inch away from being buried in a blonde girl’s cleavage. Bradshaw’s head pops up, one eyebrow raised. “Landon—dude. Sorry, I didn’t see you there.” He sidles down to our end of the bar. “What can I get you?” Landon gestures to me. “Ladies first.” I blink at him. The words won’t come. My mouth and lips feel parched and unable to ask for the one thing they want—a drink. Or Landon’s tongue in my mouth. Whichever comes first. “Hmm.” He presses his index finger to his lips—his full, gorgeous, sensual lips. “You look like a martini drinker.” Honestly, I’m not—martinis are more of my boss’s kind of cocktail—something with one hundred dollars’ worth of vodka and at least a dozen olives. “Dirty?” My eyes fly back up to his and his dark brow is cocked. “Excuse me?” I manage to say. It’s more like a squeak. “Dirty?” he repeats. “A dirty martini?” Oh. Because that was totally what I was thinking when he said that word. Sure. “Um, yes. Please. Thank you.”

Check out the prologue here!PrologueI met her at a bar. She had a beer bottle in her hand even though she looked like she should be sipping champagne out of an expensive flute, and that inexplicably turned me on. She was pretty and looked completely out of place in the no-name bar sitting across from one of my longtime friends who also happened to be her long-lost brother. He was the reason she was here. In that split second that I laid my eyes on her I wanted to be the reason she stayed. I knew it was rude and that the two of them needed some time together, some time to figure out what they were to each other now that she had blasted into his life unannounced. If I was a better friend I would have left them alone. As it was, I made my way over to the tiny table and sat down. I was covered in sawdust and had drywall mud caked in the hair on my head and on my face, but she didn’t flinch or bat an eyelash when I purposely broke up their party of two and placed myself as close to her as I could without actually touching her. My buddy Rowdy St. James lifted his eyebrows at me as I stared at her while he introduced us. Sayer Cole. Even her name was elegant and sophisticated sounding. She was an enigma, this pretty woman that seemed like she should be in any place but this bar with the two of us. She’d showed up out of the blue a couple of months ago claiming to be Rowdy’s half sister, claiming that they shared a father, claiming that all she wanted was to be in his life and have some kind of family of her own. She looked too delicate to be that brave. Came across as way too proper to have said “fuck it all” and picked up her life to move it someplace unknown without being sure of her welcome. She looked like silk, but if my guess was right about her, it was silk wrapped around steel. Luckily Rowdy was a good guy. After the shock of discovering he wasn’t alone in the world, and once he realized he had someone tied to him by blood forever and ever, he had warmed up to the idea of having a sister and appreciated that the sister was Sayer. I liked Rowdy a lot. He was a stand-up guy and a good friend, but I had a feeling I was going to like his newly found big sister even more. In my usual tactless way I asked him without looking directly at the knockout blonde, “So you have a sister? A hot, classy sister?” A sister that was also a lawyer, so beautiful and smart. I expected a giggle from her or an eye roll at the outlandish compliment, but what I got was a wide-eyed stare of disbelief as eyes bluer than anything I had ever seen on earth danced between me and her brother like she wasn’t sure what to do with herself or with my overt interest in her. I thought that I had gone too far, pushed the beautiful stranger too far out of her comfort zone. I was a big guy and knew I looked far wilder and rougher than I actually was. I figured it might be too much for a woman already obviously out of her element and depth to take. Instead, Sayer surprised me and I could see by the way he stiffened that she surprised Rowdy, too. While she wasn’t exactly overflowing with welcome and warmth, she did ask me about the current project I was working on after Rowdy explained I was a general contractor and had rebuilt the new tattoo shop he worked in. She seemed genuinely interested, and when I told her that my specialty was rehabbing old houses and giving them new life, her eyes practically glowed at me. I wanted to touch her to see if she felt as smooth and polished as she looked. I wanted to leave streaks of dirt on her perfect face to mark the fact that I had touched her, that she had let me touch her. It was a primal and visceral reaction that I couldn’t explain and I liked the way it felt. Liked the weight and heft of it in my blood even if I knew the feeling wasn’t likely to be returned. She told me all about a fantastic but crumbling Victorian she had purchased that was falling down around her. She asked me for a business card and I saw Rowdy stiffen across the table. I sighed and rubbed a hand over my already messy hair. I watched her eyes follow the light cloud of dust that escaped the strands. I was great at my job, loved what I did, but I couldn’t do anything with her or for her without laying everything on the line. Especially not with Rowdy giving me the death glare from just a few feet away. I dug the card out of my wallet, and when I handed it over our fingers touched. I saw her eyes widen and her lips part, just barely. She looked a little dazed when I grinned at her. “You take that card, but understand that the man giving it to you has a past.” She blinked at me and cleared her throat. “What kind of past?” It wasn’t something I liked to tell a beautiful woman when I first met her. It was something I liked to work up to, liked to prove it was behind me, but with this one it seemed like I wouldn’t get that chance. “I tell everyone that I do any kind of work for or that considers hiring me on for a project that I have a criminal history. I spent time locked up for a few years, and while I’m not proud of it I can’t deny it happened. I was a hotheaded kid and it got me in trouble, but I’m the best at what I do, so I hope that doesn’t discourage you from giving me a call.” Hopefully for more than some construction. Usually I got a concerned frown followed by a hundred questions about what had led me to serving time. I got none of that from the stunning blonde. She tilted her head to the side and considered me silently for a long moment before reaching down and slipping my card in her purse. If anything, I could have sworn she was wearing a look of sympathy when she told me softly, “I see it every day from the inside. Sometimes the system simply gets it wrong.” A slight grin turned her mouth up at the corners, and I wanted to lean over and kiss it. “People make mistakes. Hopefully they learn from them.” I don’t know that “wrong” was accurate in my case so much as misguided, but the complete lack of judgment or censure coming from her made me want to pull her into my arms and hold on to her even more. I had made a mistake, a huge one, one that I was forever going to have to carry around with me, but I had learned from it, was still learning from it. That kind of understanding from a total stranger was so rare, especially coming from someone in the legal field. I wasn’t accustomed to someone looking at me and seeing me, just me, not an ex-con loser after I explained where I had been. It was wildly refreshing and attractive. I couldn’t quite get a handle on what made the woman tick, but I would welcome any opportunity she gave me to figure it out. I found her outwardly flawless and pristine demeanor tempting to taint with my dirty hands and ways, and there was something about the way she watched me, the way she turned toward me like she was drawn to me, that made me think maybe I wasn’t alone in the inexplicable pull department. Rowdy left and she stayed. We had a couple more beers and talked some more about her house and what she wanted done with it. She already hired one contractor but felt like the guy was ripping her off. It happened a lot in the industry, so I wouldn’t be surprised if the guy was taking her for a ride. Spending time with her was easy. She was fun to talk to and really fun to look at. I really wanted to get my hands on her house and of course on her, and I felt like she was maybe, kind of, slightly leaning in the same direction when I made the mistake of asking her about her past. I asked about where she had been before she found out about Rowdy and decided to move to Denver so that she could get to know him. I was curious what kind of life she had where she could leave everything behind and not be missed. Really I wanted to know if she had a boyfriend or husband stashed somewhere, but the simple inquiry must have touched a nerve. The next thing I knew she had paid out the tab for both of us and disappeared into the night. She went from glowing and bright to frigid and untouchable in the span of a heartbeat. I figured I blew my shot by being too blunt, as always. I assumed she probably did have someone else in the picture and had been friendly and polite only because I was good friends with her brother. I thought I would never hear from her again and was baffled why the thought of that made my chest ache and my heart feel like it weighed two tons. Imagine my surprise when she called me and hired me to renovate her house a week later without a bid, without a contract, without even knowing if I was half as good as I claimed to be. Of course I accepted, but I knew once I was inside I would need to knock down and rearrange more than just the walls of the house, in order to get at something beautiful and lasting. Love is a fantasy. Something that people convince themselves is real, but it isn’t. I was taught at a very young age that love is toxic. Since then I have learned to not need anyone. I have a small group of friends but they are given my loyalty. I have no use for love. She is dangerous to me. She makes me wonder what her touch would feel like. Lacey Hunt is toxic to me.
When two people are irreparably broken can they rise from the ashes?
Can love exist in two black hearts?
